Dear Prospective Resident:
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California Irvine, I want to thank you for your interest in our residency training program.
The Orthopaedic Residency Training Program at UC Irvine is a five-year training program with four residents per year. The University of California Irvine Orthopaedic residency program challenges residents to reach their full potential as clinicians and surgeons through close teaching and mentorship. The educational curriculum includes formal didactics as well as graduated clinical autonomy to provide trainees with the knowledge and skillset needed to become successful orthopaedic surgeons. The program is led by 17 full time faculty members and additional adjunct faculty who provide daily teaching and mentorship in every orthopaedic subspecialty. UC Irvine Health is the only major academic medical center in Orange County, California, serving a population of over 3 million people. As such, our program is designed for maximum resident participation and exposure. Our senior level residents are expected to have mastered both basic and complex Orthopaedic procedures preparing them for whatever subspecialty choose to pursue. In addition, faculty in every subspecialty are involved in clinical and basic science research, which ensure residents are exposed to, and involved in, a wide array of academic endeavors. Our residents are extremely active in research with most residents presenting and publishing multiple papers during their residency. Residents who enter our program understand this is a vigorous and challenging program. Due to the high volume of cases, junior and senior level residents are actively engaged in the daily clinical and operative decision making that takes place. The residents are expected to take charge of patient care and are given considerable responsibility with constant involvement and supervision by faculty. Our core didactic curriculum compliments the clinical learning environment and involves all subspecialties. Daily subspecialty conferences occur every morning, Monday through Wednesday, with grand rounds every Thursday morning. Grand rounds includes a mix of formal didactive sessions, case based presentations, focused reviews of orthopaedic literature, In-training test preparation as well as guest lectureships. In addition, a fully equipped on-site cadaveric bio-skills lab enhances the clinical training through both formal and independent opportunities. The program performance on the annual In-Training examination attests to the quality of our residents, the educational curriculum, as well as their experience and training. In addition to the training at the UCI Health Medical Center in Orange, our residents rotate at our two affiliate sites, the Tibor Rubin Veterans Affairs Hospital and Miller Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Long Beach.
